What jobs will AI replace

How does artificial intelligence affect the future of work and which careers are at risk of being displaced?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a discipline of engineering that equips systems to execute functions that usually involve human intelligence, such as logic, learning, decision making, and awareness.

AI has the potential to transform many industries and sectors, creating new opportunities and challenges for workers.

Some professions are more exposed to AI than others, depending on the type and complexity of the tasks they involve.

According to a recent OECD report, the occupations that have been most exposed to advances in, and automation by, AI have tended to be high-skilled, white-collar ones, such as:

1. Business professionals

2. Managers

3. Science and engineering professionals

4. Legal, social and cultural professionals

These occupations require abilities that AI has made significant progress in, such as information ordering, memorisation, perceptual speed, and deductive reasoning.

However, higher exposure to AI does not necessarily mean that these jobs will be easily replaced. In fact, some evidence suggests that workers who have strong digital skills may have a greater ability to adapt to and use AI at work, and hence, to reap the benefits that these technologies bring.

On the other hand, some occupations that are less exposed to AI may also face challenges, especially if they involve tasks that are routine, manual, or low-skilled.

These include:

1. Clerical support workers

2. Service and sales workers

3. Plant and machine operators

4. Elementary occupations

These occupations require abilities that AI has made less progress in, such as physical and psychomotor skills. However, these jobs may also be vulnerable to other forms of automation, such as robotics, or to outsourcing and offshoring.

Moreover, workers in these jobs may have fewer opportunities to acquire the skills and competencies that are needed to work with AI.

Therefore, the impact of AI on professions is not straightforward, and depends on many factors, such as the level of education, the degree of computer use, the nature of the tasks, and the sector of activity.

AI may create new jobs, but it may also change the existing ones, requiring workers to update their skills and competencies.

Making sure that workers have the right skills to work with new technologies is therefore a key policy challenge.
