The domain of a GS1 Digital Link

There are several factors that should be considered when deciding which domain should be used in your GS1 Digital Link URL.

Use your brand's own internet domain

It is recommended that you build your GS1 Digital Link URLs using a domain name you own.

As this will determine where a user is taken when they scan your GS1 Digital Link barcode or NFC tag, the domain name should be the first component expressed in your URL as highlighted in the example below:

https://example.com/01/05012345000008

The benefits of your own brand domain name include:

1. Consumers will be confident that the URL their mobile phone displays is owned by your brand and more likely to trust the link.

2. You will have direct access to, and ownership of any analytics captured by the website associated with your domain name, such as the frequency and locations at which the QR code is being scanned.

3. Your domain name is a brand asset that can be transferred if your brand is sold or acquired. This means that 2D barcodes containing your GS1 Digital Link URL would not have to be reprinted.

When creating GS1 Digital Link URLs, there are some important considerations regarding the domain name. Let's dive into the details:

Domain Choice:

You can use any domain name in the Digital Link URI ?the domain name is not part of the GS1 identification.

Therefore, you have flexibility in selecting a domain that aligns with your brand or company.

The domain you choose will determine where a user is taken when they scan your GS1 Digital Link barcode or NFC tag.

Purpose of the GS1 Digital Link URI:

A QR Code containing a GS1 Digital Link URI serves two functions:

Product Identification: It identifies the product using GS1 identifiers (such as GTIN-13, GTIN-14, SSCC, etc.) that are recognized by scanners without an online lookup. Essentially, it functions like traditional EAN/UPC linear barcodes.

Web Connection: It acts as a connection to the web, just like any other URL. Specialized software (such as apps) can perform specific functions following a scan of the QR Code (e.g., checking for allergens, providing product instructions, fashion pairings, etc.).

Redirection:

Since the GS1 Digital Link URI uses GS1 identifiers to identify the product, it should not be the URL of a web page.

Instead, there should be some form of redirection from the GS1 Digital Link URI to the most appropriate location on the web.

The dual function (online and offline) of a GS1 Digital Link URI necessitates its precise structure. Scanning software must distinguish between QR Codes containing GS1 identifiers and those that do not.

For example, a point-of-sale (POS) scanner treats the GS1 Digital Link in a QR Code as a barcode containing a GTIN, not a regular URL.

Path Segments:

A GS1 Digital Link URI can include any number of path segments between the domain name and the /01 segment (which signals the beginning of the GS1 identifier hierarchy).

This flexibility allows you to organize your URLs effectively.

Remember that the domain you choose plays a crucial role in the overall user experience, so consider it carefully!
