What is GS1 Digital Link?

GS1 Digital Link is a standardized method of encoding identifiers such as GS1 GTINs, GLNs, and SSCCs.

These identifiers can be encoded in barcodes and scanned, or linked to online information.

Depending on different business needs, GS1 Digital Link can be used in different ways in different use cases.

For example, in healthcare, GS1 identifiers are often encoded in a GS1 DataMatrix and converted into GS1 Numeric Link URIs in scanning software (often using a mobile app).

In the retail sector, GS1 Digital Link is an important part of the industry's global migration to 2D barcodes, with the goal of enabling every product to have a multi-purpose 2D barcode that can be used at the point of sale and access digital content such as authentication, purpose Description, product information, traceability information, etc.

Simply put, GS1 Digital Link allows barcode information to be embedded at the end of a URL, giving consumers, retailers and anyone in the supply chain access to a range of instantly updateable, brand-controlled product information.

The standard can be applied to any type of QR code and can provide new promotions or usage ideas through constantly updated digital content by brands without changing product packaging.

The goal of GS1 Digital Link is to increase supply chain visibility, ensure product safety and bring rich information to consumers through a single data-rich QR code.

Developed by retailers, brands, solution providers, technology experts and GS1, the standard aims to modernize barcoding so everyone can better connect and share information, improving transparency, product authenticity and traceability, while Promote consumer engagement.

The steps to generate and parse GS1 Digital Link are as follows:

Generate GS1 Digital Link:

Determine the product's GS1 identifier, such as GTIN, GLN or SSCC.

Choose a brand or company-owned web domain as your base.

Build a URI structure, including:

Domain name:

The web domain name of a brand or company.

Primary ID key:

GS1 Application Identifier (AI), indicating the type of identifier used, such as GTIN-13, GTIN-14, SSCC, etc.

Identifier:

The actual product identification number based on the AI key, such as a 12-digit UPC.

Qualifier:

Optional additional ID, such as batch number, serial number, etc.

Attributes: Optional data points such as weight, dimensions, expiration date, etc.

For example, a GS1 Digital Link URI might look like this:

https://brand.com/01/01234567890123.
