The history of Code93 barcode

What is the historical origin of the Code93 barcode?

The Code93 barcode was designed by Intermec in 1982 to improve the density and data security of the Code39 barcode.

It is an alphanumeric, variable-length symbology. Code93 barcodes are primarily used by Canada Post to encode supplementary delivery information.

Each symbol contains two check characters. The character encoding of the Code93 barcode consists of 3 black lines and 3 white lines, a total of 6 lines, and each character occupies 9 equal parts. Code93 barcodes are more compact, more secure, and narrower than Code39 barcodes. It is used in military and automotive fields.

1. What are the applications of Code93 barcodes?

Postal Services:

Code93 barcodes are used by Canada Post to encode supplementary delivery information, such as postal code, destination, weight, etc., to improve mail tracking and management efficiency.

Military and automotive fields:

Code93 barcodes are more secure and more compact than Code39 barcodes and can read letters and numbers, so they are suitable for use in military and automotive fields, such as identification of equipment, parts, vehicles, etc.

Other areas:

Code93 barcodes can also be used in other areas that require high density and data security, such as inventory management, logistics tracking, ticketing systems, etc.

2. Structural characteristics of Code93 barcode

Each character consists of 3 black lines and 3 white lines, a total of 9 modules.

Each barcode contains two check characters to increase data reliability.

By using four additional characters ($, %, /, +), it can be expanded to a Full ASCII Code93 barcode, supporting 128 characters.

Its structure is as follows:

A start character*

Encoded message

First modulo-47 check character "C"

Second modulo-47 check character "K"

Stop Character*

Termination bar

3. What is the difference between Code93 barcode and Code39?

The character set of the Code93 barcode is the same as the Code39 barcode, including ten numbers from 0 to 9, twenty-six English capital letters from A to Z, and eight special characters.

The Code93 barcode is more secure than the Code39 barcode. It uses double check characters, which means there are two check codes in the barcode, which can reduce the error rate when the scanner reads the barcode.

The printing length of Code93 barcode is shorter than Code39 barcode, and under the same character set, it is narrower than Code39 barcode. This is because each character of a Code93 barcode occupies 9 equal parts, while each character of a Code39 barcode occupies 12 equal parts.

Code93 barcodes are easier to identify than Code39 barcodes and more reliable than Code39 barcodes.
