The history of IATA barcode

The IATA barcode, also known as the Bar Coded Boarding Pass (BCBP), is a standardized format used for boarding passes in the airline industry. It allows passengers to check in, pass through security, and board flights more efficiently.

Here are some key points about the IATA barcode:

1. Purpose and Origins:

The BCBP was developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) as part of its Simplifying the Business program.

The primary goal was to streamline the boarding process by replacing traditional magnetic stripe boarding passes with barcoded ones.

2. Components of the IATA Barcode:

2D Barcodes: These encode essential information such as passenger details, flight data, and seat assignments.

BCBP Standard (Resolution 792): Specifies the format and content of the barcoded boarding pass.

Boarding Pass: The physical document containing the barcode.

Mobile and Web BCBP: BCBPs can also be displayed on mobile devices and web platforms.

Departure Control System: The system used by airlines to manage passenger check-in and boarding.

3. Deployment Timeline:

IATA began deploying BCBPs across its member airlines in 2005.

By 2010, the industry achieved the goal of having all boarding passes barcoded.

Other Media Used as Boarding Passes:

Some airlines allow passengers to use their mobile phones with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology as a boarding pass.

Emerging technologies like facial recognition and fingerprint scans are being explored for seamless boarding.

4. Other Media Used as Boarding Passes:

Mobile Phones (NFC): Some airlines allow passengers to use their mobile phones with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology as a boarding pass.

Biometrics: Emerging technologies like facial recognition and fingerprint scans are being explored for seamless boarding.

In summary, the BCBP revolutionized the way we board flights, making the process more efficient and convenient for travelers worldwide.

In summary, the IATA barcode has significantly improved the efficiency of air travel by simplifying the boarding process.

The IATA standard 2D barcode includes two common 2D barcode formats:

1. PDF417:

This is a common 2D barcode format used in BCBP. It is a high-density, variable-length barcode that can store large amounts of information. PDF417 barcodes usually contain data such as flight information, passenger name, seat number, boarding gate, date and time. Its appearance resembles a pattern of a series of black and white squares.

2. Aztec Code:

This is another common 2D barcode format, also used in BCBP. Aztec Code is a compact two-dimensional matrix barcode usually used to store less information. Its appearance resembles a pattern of black and white modules surrounding a central point.

Regardless of the format used, BCBP's 2D barcodes contain the necessary boarding information to be scanned and verified at the airport.
