The history of Data Matrix barcode

The Data Matrix barcode is a two-dimensional code consisting of black and white 'cells' or dots arranged in either a square or rectangular pattern.

Developed by International Data Matrix, Inc. (ID Matrix) in the 1990s, it was designed to be printed on small items, such as electronic components.

Here are some key points about Data Matrix:

1. Encoding Information:

Data Matrix can encode both text and numeric data.

The usual data size ranges from a few bytes up to 1556 bytes.

Error correction codes enhance reliability, allowing messages to be read even if some cells are damaged.

A Data Matrix symbol can store up to 2,335 alphanumeric characters.

2. Structure:

Data Matrix symbols are rectangular, usually square in shape.

They consist of square ¡°cells¡± representing bits.

Each cell can be either ¡°light¡± (0) or ¡°dark¡± (1).

The symbol includes two solid adjacent borders forming an ¡°L¡± shape (the ¡°finder pattern¡±) and alternating dark/light cells (the ¡°timing pattern¡±).

Rows and columns of cells encode information within these borders.

3. Applications:

Data Matrix is commonly used for marking small items due to its ability to encode fifty characters in a small symbol readable at 2¨C3 mm (0.003¨C0.005 sq in) with only a 20% contrast ratio.

It's scalable, with applications ranging from tiny images (300 micrometers) to large ones (1 meter square).

Industries use it for labeling electronic components, printed media (labels, letters), and industrial engineering purposes.

The first patent for the DataMatrix barcode was issued in 1997, and it has since become widely adopted for various purposes.
