The history of ISSN barcode

The International Standard Serial Number (ISSN) is an eight-digit code used to uniquely identify a serial publication, such as a magazine or journal.

The ISSN system was first drafted as an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard in 1971 and published as ISO 3297 in 1975. It plays a crucial role in managing and identifying serial publications worldwide.

It's especially helpful in distinguishing between serials with the same title.

Here are some key points about the ISSN system:

Purpose and Use:

The ISSN system assists in ordering, cataloging, and interlibrary loans related to serial literature.

When a serial is published in multiple media types (e.g., print and electronic), each type is assigned a different ISSN.

The linking ISSN (ISSN-L) connects all ISSNs assigned to the same serial across different media.

Code Format:

An ISSN consists of eight digits divided by a hyphen into two four-digit numbers.

The last digit can be a decimal digit (0-9) or an 'X' (used as a check digit).

Let's take a look at an example ISSN:

0378-5955.

Here's how it breaks down:

The ISSN consists of two parts separated by a hyphen:

The first part (before the hyphen) contains four digits: 0378.

The second part (after the hyphen) also contains four digits: 5955.

The last digit in the ISSN is a check digit. It ensures the integrity of the code and helps prevent errors during data entry.

To calculate the check digit:

Multiply each of the first seven digits by its position (from right to left):

(0 \times 8 = 0)

(3 \times 7 = 21)

(7 \times 6 = 42)

(8 \times 5 = 40)

(5 \times 4 = 20)

(5 \times 3 = 15)

(5 \times 2 = 10)

Add the resulting products: (0 + 21 + 42 + 40 + 20 + 15 + 10 = 148).

Calculate the remainder of this sum modulo 11: (148 \mod 11 = 3).

Subtract the remainder from 11: (11 - 3 = 8).

Therefore, the check digit is 8.

The complete ISSN for the journal [Hearing Research] is 0378-5955. The check digit (8) ensures that this ISSN is valid and unique for that specific serial publication.

The ISSN system plays a crucial role in identifying and managing serial publications worldwide.
