The limitations of EAN barcode

The limitations of EAN barcode

The International Article Number (EAN), also known as the European Article Number, is a standard barcode symbology and numbering system used globally to identify specific retail products.

The EAN barcode system emerged in 1979 as a response to the need for a standardized product identification system beyond North America.

The EAN barcodes offer several advantages, making them widely adopted in the retail industry.

But EAN Code still has limitations.

The EAN-13 barcode system, widely used for product identification in the retail industry, has both advantages and limitations.

1. Numeric Data Only:

EAN-13 barcodes can encode only numeric data. They cannot represent alphabets or special characters. This limitation restricts their use to numerical product codes and prevents them from encoding other types of information.

2. Tolerance for Damage and Distortion:

Like other linear barcodes, EAN-13 has a very small tolerance for damage and distortion. If the barcode is scratched, torn, or otherwise compromised, it may not be scannable by barcode scanners. Ensuring the integrity of the barcode is crucial for accurate scanning.

3. Fixed Length:

The EAN-13 barcode always contains a fixed number of digits¡ªspecifically, 13 digits. These digits are divided into four components: the leading digit, the country code, the manufacturer code, and the product code. The fixed length means that the barcode cannot be adjusted to accommodate additional information beyond the predefined structure.

4. Country Code Limitation:

While the country code identifies the country of origin of the product, it does not necessarily indicate the original manufacturing location. Therefore, it may not provide precise information about where the product was actually produced.

Despite these limitations, EAN-13 barcodes remain widely used due to their efficiency in inventory management and supply chain tracking. Retailers and manufacturers must be aware of these limitations and work within their constraints to ensure accurate product identification and data tracking.

Why promote GS1 Sunrise 2027 2d Barcode?

GS1 Sunrise 2027 is an initiative aimed at transitioning from the traditional one-dimensional (1D) barcodes (such as EAN/UPC) to two-dimensional (2D) barcodes.

Let me explain why this transition is being promoted:

1. Limitations of 1D Barcodes:

The EAN/UPC barcode has been widely used for decades, primarily for price lookup functionality.

However, it no longer meets the growing demands for greater product information transparency, traceability, and authentication.

Stakeholders and consumers need more than just basic product identification.

2. Advantages of 2D Barcodes (Sunrise 2027):

More Data Capacity: 2D barcodes can carry significantly more information than 1D barcodes.

Consumer Information: Consumers can access details like nutritional information, allergens, sustainability, and sourcing data by scanning a 2D barcode with their smartphones.

Supply Chain Benefits:

Improved Inventory Management: 2D barcodes help streamline inventory processes.

Enhanced Recall Readiness: Better traceability and recall management.

Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing: Transparency in sourcing practices.

Product Authentication: Ensures product authenticity.

Greater Brand Trust: Consumers appreciate detailed information.
