The limitations of Code 128

What are the limitations of Code 128?

Code 128 is a high-density linear barcode symbology that was developed in 1981 by the Computer Identics Corporation.

Its name, "128", signifies that it can encode all 128 characters of the ASCII character set.

Code 128 revolutionized barcode technology by providing a powerful and versatile solution for data identification. Its widespread adoption in various industries underscores its significance in modern logistics and supply chains.

While Code 128 is a versatile barcode symbology, it does have some limitations. Let's explore them:

1. Character Set Restrictions:

Although Code 128 can encode all 128 ASCII characters, it doesn¡¯t support non-ASCII characters (such as accented letters or non-Latin scripts).

If you need to encode non-ASCII characters, other barcode formats like QR codes or Data Matrix may be more suitable.

2. Fixed Length:

Code 128 barcodes have a fixed length based on the data being encoded.

If your data varies significantly in length, you might end up with larger or smaller barcodes than desired.

In contrast, Code 39 allows variable-length encoding.

3. Quiet Zone Requirements:

Like all barcodes, Code 128 requires a quiet zone (blank space) before and after the barcode.

Insufficient quiet zone can lead to scanning errors.

Ensuring proper quiet zones can be challenging in tight spaces.

4. Complex Encoding Rules:

Code 128 uses different code sets (A, B, and C) for different types of characters.

Switching between code sets can be complex, especially when encoding mixed data (alphanumeric and numeric).

Users must follow specific rules to select the appropriate code set.

5. Checksum Sensitivity:

The checksum digit in Code 128 is essential for error detection.

If the checksum is incorrect due to a scanning error or data corruption, the entire barcode may be considered invalid.

6. Scanning Angle and Resolution:

Code 128 barcodes are sensitive to scanning angle and resolution.

Scanning from extreme angles or using low-resolution scanners can affect readability.

Other barcodes, such as PDF417, are more robust in this regard.

7. Limited Use Cases:

While Code 128 is widely used, it may not be the best choice for all scenarios.

For small items or products with limited packaging space, other barcodes like EAN-13 or Data Matrix might be more suitable.

In summary, Code 128 is powerful but has specific requirements and limitations. Choosing the right barcode symbology depends on factors like data content, available space, and scanning environment.
