PDF417 compare to QR codes

How does PDF417 compare to QR codes?

PDF417 is a powerful barcode format with diverse applications, high data capacity, and security features. Its invention by Dr. Ynjiun P. Wang has significantly impacted data encoding and decoding in various fields.

Let's compare PDF417 and QR codes to understand their differences and advantages:

1. Structure and Data Capacity:

PDF417:

PDF417 is a stacked linear barcode format.

It consists of several linear rows of stacked codewords.

Variable in dimensions, often seen in a rectangular shape.

Offers higher data storage capacity compared to 1D barcodes.

QR Codes:

QR codes are 2D matrix barcodes.

They are basically square in shape.

QR codes have a larger capacity than both PDF417 and DataMatrix codes.

Extremely popular for mobile applications due to their quick readability.

2. Reading Mechanism:

PDF417:

Can be read from left to right in linear order with a simple linear scan.

Uses a stacked structure of codewords.

QR Codes:

Require a 2D imaging scanner to read them.

Can encode Kanji characters in addition to alphanumeric data.

3. Error Correction:

Both PDF417 and QR codes use the Reed-Solomon algorithm for error detection and correction.

PDF417 can be read even if up to 50% of it is damaged, while QR codes can handle up to 30% damage.

4. Applications:

PDF417:

Commonly found in logistics, transportation (boarding passes), government identification (driver licenses and ID cards), inventory, and document management (postal packages).

QR Codes:

Widely used for online or app payments, augmented reality, website login, loyalty programs, marketing campaigns, and more.

5. Customization:

PDF417 offers more customization options.

QR codes are simpler and more standardized.

In summary, choose PDF417 when you need higher data capacity and robust error correction. Opt for QR codes for quick readability and mobile applications. Each has its strengths based on the specific use case.
