LOOKUP function in Excel

A very useful function - Excel LOOKUP: searches for a value in a row or column.

Two ways to use the LOOKUP function: vector form and array form.

The five common uses of the LOOKUP function include: general reference, exact match, multi-criteria lookup, reverse lookup, and range lookup.

An Example:

To use the general reference of the LOOKUP function in Excel, you can use the vector form of the function.

The vector form of the LOOKUP function searches for a value in a row or column and returns a corresponding value from the same position in another row or column.

Here is the syntax for the vector form of the LOOKUP function:

=LOOKUP(lookup_value, lookup_vector, result_vector)

lookup_value is the value you want to search for.

lookup_vector is the range of cells that contains the values to be searched.

result_vector is the range of cells that contains the values to be returned.

The LOOKUP function searches for the lookup_value in the lookup_vector and returns the corresponding value from the same position in the result_vector.

If the lookup_value is not found in the lookup_vector, the function returns the last value in the result_vector.

For example, suppose you have a table of data that contains the names of employees and their salaries.

You can use the vector form of the LOOKUP function to search for an employee’s name and return their salary.

Here is an example formula:

=LOOKUP("John", A2:A10, B2:B10)

This formula searches for the name “John?in the range A2:A10 and returns the corresponding salary from the same position in the range B2:B10.

VLOOKUP searches for a value in the first column of a table and returns the corresponding value from the column you specify.

HLOOKUP searches for a value in the first row of a table and returns the corresponding value from the row you specify.

LOOKUP is used to search for a value in a vector or array and return the corresponding value from the same position in a second vector or array.

XLOOKUP is a new function in Excel 365 that searches for a value in a table and returns the corresponding value.

Unlike VLOOKUP and HLOOKUP, XLOOKUP can search anywhere in the table and can return multiple values in that row or column when a match is found.
