SUM function in Excel

SUM function is used to add values: add individual values, cell references or ranges, or a mix of all three.

For example:

=SUM(A2:A10) adds the values in cells A2 through A10=SUM(A2:A10, C2:C10) adds the values in cells A2 through A10, as well as cells C2 through C10.

To use the SUM function, type =SUM( in a blank cell, then select the range of cells you want to add and close the brackets. Press ENTER to get the sum of the selected numbers.

You can also use the SUM function to add up to 255 individual arguments.

The syntax is =SUM(number1, number2, number3, ..., number255).

Only SUM positive numbers in a range

To sum only positive numbers in a range, you can use the SUMIF function in Excel. The syntax for the function is:

=SUMIF(range,">0",sum_range).

Here, range is the range of cells you want to test for positive numbers, and sum_range is the range of cells you want to add up.

The formula will only add up the cells in sum_range that correspond to positive numbers in range.

For example, if you have a range of numbers in cells A1 through A10, and you want to add up only the positive numbers in that range.

You can use the formula:

=SUMIF(A1:A10,">0",A1:A10) .

Can I use SUMIF with text values?

Yes, you can use the SUMIF function with text values in Excel.

The syntax for the function is:

=SUMIF(range, criteria, sum_range).

Here, range is the range of cells you want to test for the criteria, criteria is the text value you want to match, and sum_range is the range of cells you want to add up.

The formula will only add up the cells in sum_range that correspond to the text value in range.

For example, if you have a range of text values in cells A1 through A10, and you want to add up only the cells that contain the text “apple?

You can use the formula:

=SUMIF(A1:A10,"apple",B1:B10).
