How to create barcodes

1D and 2D barcode

1D Barcodes (Linear Barcodes)

2D Barcodes (Two-Dimensional Barcodes)

Let's delve into the fascinating world of 1D and 2D barcodes

1. 1D Barcodes (Linear Barcodes):

.......Description: 1D barcodes, also known as one-dimensional barcodes, consist of vertical lines of varying widths with specific gaps, resulting in a particular pattern.

.......Characteristics:

.......Encode data in a linear format.

.......Simpler and more common.

.......Represent information such as product numbers, prices, and inventory codes.

.......Examples include:

.......UPC-A: Used for retail products.

.......EAN-13: Commonly seen on consumer goods.

.......Code 128: Widely used in logistics and shipping.

.......Reading Devices: 1D barcodes are read using laser barcode scanners.

2. 2D Barcodes (Two-Dimensional Barcodes):

.......Description: 2D barcodes are more complex and encode data in square or rectangular patterns of two dimensions.

.......Characteristics:

.......Store more data per unit area than 1D barcodes.

.......Support a larger character set.

.......Examples include:

.......QR Code: Used for various purposes, including marketing and ticketing.

.......PDF417: Commonly found on driver’s licenses and identification cards.

.......DataMatrix: Used for small items and electronic components.

.......Reading Devices: 2D barcodes require 2D imagers for scanning.

Choosing the right barcode type depends on the information you need to encode. Consider the following character sets:

.......Numeric: Includes numbers only (0-9).

.......Alpha-numeric: Includes numbers and alphabetic characters (0-9 and A-Z).

.......GS1 AI encodable character set 82: Includes numbers, alphabetic characters, and special characters.

.......Full ASCII: Includes any ASCII character (value 0-127).

.......Tips: 2D barcodes are relatively new and may require more complex scanning devices.

What are the commonly used 1D barcodes?

.......UPC-A: This is a barcode with 11 digits of product information data and a trailing check digit, for a total of 12 digits. It is widely used in the global retail industry and is printed on almost every consumer product.

.......UPC-E: This is a variation of UPC-A that achieves a more compact barcode by squeezing unnecessary zeros. It is typically used for products with limited space where a full UPC-A barcode cannot reasonably fit.

.......EAN-8: EAN-8 is derived from the longer EAN-13 code and its main purpose is to use as little space as possible. It is suitable for small products such as candy, cigarettes and pencils.

.......EAN-13: This is a 13-bit (12 data and a check) barcode standard, and most European countries are using this type. It is a superset of the original 12-digit Universal Product Code (UPC) system and is therefore capable of automatically reading UPC-A symbols.

.......Code 39: This is an alphanumeric barcode used to encode textual information such as product number, production date, etc.

.......Code 128: This is a high-density full ASCII character set barcode suitable for information containing any ASCII character.

QR code (Quick Response Code) is currently the most commonly used 2D barcode. Its data capacity and supported character sets are:

.......Data capacity: One QR code symbol can hold up to:

.......7089 numeric characters

.......4296 alphanumeric characters

.......2953 bytes (binary data)

.......1817 Kanji characters (character set according to JIS X 0208).

.......Character Set: QR Code originally defined JIS-8/Shift-JIS as the default character set, corresponding to ECI 000020 (by design, other character sets are available by using a different ECI).

.......Although the QR Code 2005 standard (ISO/IEC 18004:2006) defines Latin-1 as the default character set, mobile applications often use UTF-8 as the default character set (without additional ECI).

.......QR codes have the characteristics of storing large-capacity information, printing in a small space, effectively expressing various letters, being highly adaptable to soiling and damage, being able to be read from any direction, and supporting data merging functions. Its application in real life is becoming more and more common.
