Detail about GTIN-12 barcode

The GTIN-12 barcode, also known as the Universal Product Code (UPC), is a widely used standard for product identification in the United States.

The GTIN-12 consists of twelve numeric characters.

It is primarily used for item and logistical identification.

The GTIN-12 is part of the GS1 global data structures that employ 12 digits and can be encoded into various types of data carriers.

Components of GTIN-12:

U.P.C. Company Prefix:

The first part of a GTIN-12 (UPC) code is the UPC Company Prefix.

A UPC Company Prefix is a 6 to 10-digit number assigned by the GS1 organization in the United States.

The length of the Company Prefix varies based on the number of products a manufacturer needs to identify.

For instance, a small company requiring identification for only a few products would receive a 10-digit number.

GS1 now offers single UPCs for small companies that need only a few UPCs for product identification. These single UPCs do not have a separate Company Prefix but are designated in the GS1 Global Registry.

Item Reference Number:

The UPC Company Prefix and Item Reference Number together always total 11 digits.

The length of the Item Reference number depends on the UPC Company Prefix assigned.

Companies planning to sell many different items receive a shorter prefix, allowing them to assign a larger range of digits for their products.

For example, a company with a 6-digit Company Prefix would create a 5-digit product number, while a company with a 9-digit Company Prefix can only create a 2-digit number.

Each variety of item being sold requires a unique Item Reference number. For instance, different styles or sizes of a product would have distinct unique product numbers.

Check Digit:

The 12th digit of a GTIN-12 is a calculated digit based on a MOD check digit calculation from the preceding 11 digits.

The GTIN-12 serves as a crucial identifier for products, allowing efficient tracking and management throughout the supply chain.

To obtain a U.P.C. Company Prefix number, follow these steps:

Estimate the Number of Barcodes Needed:

Determine how many barcodes your company requires for the next 12-18 months.

Apply for a U.P.C. Company Prefix:

Visit the GS1 US website (https://www.gs1us.org/) and apply to establish an account.

The GS1 Company Prefix is the first part of a barcode and identifies your company.

When you get your barcodes from GS1 US, the Prefix ensures that you are listed as the brand owner of those barcodes.

Utilize Your GTIN.cloud?Account:

Once you have your GS1 Company Prefix, use your GTIN.cloud?account to assign unique product numbers to your items.
