Detail about GTIN-13 barcode

The GTIN-13 barcode is a widely used commercial distribution code that consists of 13 digits.

Here are the key details about it:

Definition:

The GTIN-13 code is an optical representation of a digital or alphabetic code used to identify a product.

It is shown on marketed products and is essential for tracking and managing inventory.

Structure:

The GTIN-13 barcode is composed of the following components:

GS1 Company Prefix: A variable-length prefix assigned by GS1 (an international agency) to identify the company.

Supplier Assigned Product Number: A unique product number assigned by the supplier.

Check Digit: A calculated digit used for error detection.

The total length of the GS1 Company Prefix and supplier assigned product number is 12 digits.

The 13th digit is the check digit, calculated using the modulo 10 formula.

Use Cases:

The GTIN-13 number can be used to identify:

Shipping units: For logistics and supply chain management.

Sale units: For point-of-sale scanning.

Serial Publications:

For serial publications (such as magazines or journals), the GTIN-13 barcode is structured as follows:

The first 3 digits correspond to the 977 prefix assigned to serial publications.

The next 7 digits correspond to the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) without hyphens.

The 11th and 12th characters are variable and can express additional information (e.g., price changes).

The 13th character is the check digit.

An optional 2 or 5-digit add-on can indicate the issue number.

Calculation and Image Creation:

To calculate the GTIN-13 code, you need to apply for your ISSN.

Once calculated, create the corresponding barcode image (a succession of vertical bars) for your publication.

The GTIN-13 barcode plays a crucial role in efficient product identification and management across global markets.

GTIN-13 barcode and EAN-13 barcode:

The EAN-13 and GTIN-13 barcodes are essentially the same. Both use a 13-digit GTIN.

The UPC (Universal Product Code) barcode, which originated in the US, also uses a 12-digit GTIN.

However, if a 13-digit number is required, you can simply add a zero to the front of your 12-digit GTIN.

both EAN-13 and GTIN-13 serve the same purpose, and their primary difference lies in their historical origins and regional usage.
