The core working principle of QR Code

GS1, EAN, and UPC are all related to barcodes used in the retail industry.

GS1 is a global organization that develops and maintains standards for supply chain management, including barcodes and identification numbers.

It provides unique identification numbers called Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), which are used to uniquely identify products. GS1 standards are widely adopted across various industries, ensuring efficient and accurate product tracking, inventory management, and data exchange. When you see a barcode on a product, it likely contains a GS1 GTIN.

Both EAN (European Article Number) and UPC (Universal Product Code) barcodes fall under the GS1 system and play a crucial role in streamlining supply chains, inventory management, and retail operations worldwide .

GS1:

GS1 is a global organization that develops and maintains standards for supply chain management, including barcodes and identification numbers.

It provides unique identification numbers called Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs), which are used to uniquely identify products.

GS1 standards are widely adopted across various industries, ensuring efficient and accurate product tracking, inventory management, and data exchange.

For example, when you see a barcode on a product, it likely contains a GS1 GTIN.

EAN (European Article Number):

EAN is a type of barcode that falls under the GS1 system.

It is an instantly recognizable 1D barcode printed on virtually every consumer product worldwide.

EAN barcodes are used for product identification, pricing, and inventory management.

When you scan an EAN barcode at a retail point of sale, it provides information about the product, such as its price and description.

UPC (Universal Product Code):

UPC is another type of barcode commonly used in North America.

Like EAN, UPC is also part of the GS1 system.

UPC barcodes are widely used in retail stores and e-commerce platforms.

They serve the same purpose as EAN barcodes: uniquely identifying products and facilitating efficient checkout processes.

In many countries and regions, there are GS1 branches, and you can apply for GS1 barcodes locally. For example: If you are in Hong Kong, you can apply for the official GS1 international barcode through "GS1 Hong Kong".

To obtain a GS1 barcode for your product, follow these steps:

Join GS1 Full Membership.

Allocate a Barcode Number (GTIN).

Generate Barcode Image (EAN-13).

Print the Barcode Image (EAN-13).

Document Requirements:

Submit a completed GS1 Full Membership application form.

Provide a copy of your company’s Business Registration Certificate.

Show proof of employee headcount (e.g., employee insurance documentation or MPF certificate).

Choose a payment method (bank transfer, credit card, or PayPal).

Application processing usually takes about 3 working days upon receipt of all required documents and payment. After joining, you’ll receive a unique Company Prefix (starting with “489”) and enjoy various benefits, including access to barcode numbers, a cloud-based product information platform, and more.
