Barcode from retail to other industries

The core working principle of barcode.

How do barcodes express numbers and characters.

Barcodes are fascinating! They allow us to encode information in a visual format that can be quickly and accurately read by machines.

Barcodes are cleverly designed patterns that allow us to express information visually, making them essential for efficient data handling in various contexts.

Let's dive into how barcodes work:

1. Basic Concept:

A barcode is a machine-readable code made up of a series of dark and light bars of varying widths.

These bars represent a short string of letters and numbers.

The combination of these bars and spaces represents varying text characters based on a pre-established algorithm specific to the barcode type.

When scanned, the barcode is translated into a line of text that your retail point-of-sale system can understand.

Barcodes are used to tag items for efficient and reliable identification.

2. Types of Barcodes:

There are dozens of barcode standards, but most work similarly.

Discrete barcodes have spaces between each character, while continuous barcodes have no spaces.

Different barcode systems use various sizes of bars.

Some barcodes have only two sizes (wide and narrow), while others have multiple sizes based on a base size.

2-Dimensional (2D) Barcodes: More complex than 1D barcodes. Can store more data, including alphanumeric characters. Examples include QR codes and Data Matrix codes.

3. Barcode Scanner Components:

A barcode scanner (also known as a barcode reader) captures and decodes the information from a barcode.

Traditional barcode scanners consist of four main components:Light source: Helps read and decode the barcode.

Lens: Scans the barcode.

Photoconductor: Translates optical impulses into electrical ones.

Decoder: Analyzes the barcode data and sends it to the scanner's output port.

Barcode scanners link to a host computer or tablet, transmitting information in real-time without additional human intervention. This automation streamlines processes like inventory tracking and point-of-sale transactions.

3. Example: UPC Barcodes:

UPC barcodes are commonly used worldwide for retail products.

They typically represent 12 digits, with each digit represented by 4 bars.

Special constructs indicate the start and end of the barcode and separate it into two halves.

Let's look at an example:

A standard set of bars might read as follows:

. 1-1-1: Start of the barcode

. 3-2-1-1: Digit '0'

. 1-1-1-4: Digit '6'

. 1-4-1-1: Digit '3'

. 1-1-3-2: Digit '4'

. 1-2-3-1: Digit '5'

. 1-2-3-1: Digit '5'

. 1-1-1-1-1: Middle of the barcode

4. Example: 3 of 9 Barcodes:

Another common type is the 3 of 9 barcode (also known as Code 39).

These barcodes can encode letters, numbers, and a few other characters.

Each character comprises 9 bars, with 3 wider bars (2 dark and 1 light).
