How do I obtain a GTIN number?

To obtain a Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) for your product.

Follow these steps:

1. GS1 Company Prefix:

First, you'll need a GS1 Company Prefix. This prefix is licensed to your company and forms the initial part of the GTIN.

The length of your company prefix determines the total number of digits in your GTIN.

2. Unique Item Reference:

This is an arbitrary number compiled by you yourself for your product.

Combine your GS1 Company Prefix with a unique item reference.

The company prefix plus the item reference will give you a total of 12 digits.

3. Check Digit: The final 13th digit is a check digit.

You can calculate this using a check digit calculator:

http://ean138.com.

4. Barcode Format:

The 13-digit GTIN can be represented in barcode format using the EAN-13 symbol. For more information on barcoding your product, reference our other artiles.

What is the process for obtaining a GS1 Company Prefix?

To obtain a GS1 Company Prefix, follow these steps:

1. Understand the Purpose:

A GS1 Company Prefix is essential for uniquely identifying your products in the global marketplace. It forms the initial part of the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN).

2. Visit GS1's Website:

Go to the GS1 website to explore available prefixes. These prefixes are not tied to any specific country of origin, as companies can manufacture products worldwide.

3. Choose Your Prefix:

Select a prefix based on your business needs. The length of the prefix determines the total number of digits in your GTIN.

--- Here are some examples:

--- GTIN-12 (UPC): Commonly used in North America for retail products.

--- GTIN-13 (EAN-13): Widely used globally for consumer goods.

--- GTIN-14: Suitable for wholesale or multipack products.

2. Apply for a Prefix:

Apply for your chosen prefix through the GS1 organization. You'll need to provide information about your company and the intended use of the prefix.

3. Receive Your Prefix:

Once approved, you'll receive your unique GS1 Company Prefix. This prefix will be the foundation for creating GTINs for your products.

4. Create GTINs:

Combine your GS1 Company Prefix with a unique item reference to create GTINs for each product. Remember to calculate the check digit for the final 13th digit.

5. Barcoding:

Encode your GTINs into barcodes (such as EAN-13 or UPC) for easy scanning and identification.

6. Print Your Certificate:

To print your GS1 Company Prefix certificate, follow these steps:

Visit the GS1 US Data Hub.

Click the [Print Identifier Certificate] link under [Identifier Tools.]

Access your certificate, which includes important information about your prefix and GTINs.

Remember, a valid GS1 Company Prefix ensures accurate tracking and efficient supply chain management.
