Advantages of using a barcode

The core working principle of QR Code

A QR code (quick-response code) is a type of two-dimensional matrix barcode, invented in 1994, by Japanese company Denso Wave for labelling automobile parts.

A QR code consists of black squares arranged in a square grid on a white background, including some fiducial markers, which can be read by an imaging device, such as a camera, and processed using Reed-Solomon error correction until the image can be appropriately interpreted.

The required data are then extracted from patterns that are present in both the horizontal and the vertical components of the QR image.

Whereas a barcode is a machine-readable optical image that contains information specific to the labelled item, the QR code contains the data for a locator, an identifier, and for web-tracking.

To efficiently store data, QR codes use four standardized modes of encoding:

(i) numeric, (ii) alphanumeric, (iii) byte or binary, and (iv) kanji.

Compared to standard UPC barcodes, the QR labelling system was applied beyond the automobile industry because of faster reading of the optical image and greater data-storage capacity in applications such as product tracking, item identification, time tracking, document management, and general marketing.

QR code is a two-dimensional barcode that encodes information in a unique arrangement of squares. Unlike traditional one-dimensional barcodes, QR codes can store more data and are quickly scanned by optical devices, such as smartphone cameras.

How QR Code work:

1. Encoding Data:

You start by inputting your desired information (such as a URL, text, or contact details) into a QR code generator.

The generator then converts this information into a specific visual pattern of black and white squares (data modules).

These data modules form the core of the QR code.

2. A QR code consists of several key components:

Data Modules: These are the individual black squares arranged in a grid. Each data module represents a specific piece of information.

Position Markers: Three position markers (inner and outer eyes) help scanners locate the data modules and determine the scanning direction.

Quiet Zone: The blank area surrounding the data modules allows scanners to identify where the QR code begins and ends.

3. Scanning and Decoding:

When you scan a QR code using an optical device (like your smartphone camera), it captures an image of the code.

The scanner then translates the arrangement of data modules back into the original information.

For example, if the QR code contains a URL, the scanner retrieves the URL from the visual pattern and opens the corresponding webpage.

Unique Features of QR Codes:

Data Capacity: QR codes can hold a significant amount of data, making them versatile for various applications.

Speed: Scanning QR codes is fast and efficient.

Universal Compatibility: Virtually all modern smartphones can instantly scan QR codes without requiring additional apps.

QR codes are like magical bridges between the physical and digital worlds, allowing real-world objects to be hyperlinked to digital content. So next time you scan one, appreciate the clever design behind those seemingly random pixels!
