About Barcode Code 128 A

Code 128 is a high-density linear barcode symbology defined in ISO/IEC 15417:2007.

It is widely used in various applications due to its ability to encode a large amount of data in a small space. Code 128 has three character sets (A, B, and C) that allow for different types of data encoding, with Code 128A focusing on uppercase letters, numbers, and control characters.

Character Set A (Code 128A)

Code 128A is designed to encode:

Uppercase alphabetic characters (A-Z)

Numeric digits (0-9)

Punctuation marks

Control characters (such as tab, line feed, etc.)

Components of a Code 128A Barcode

1.Start Character: Every Code 128 barcode begins with a start character that indicates the character set being used. For Code 128A, the start character is represented by a unique pattern of bars and spaces.

2.Data Characters: These characters follow the start character and represent the actual data to be encoded. In Code 128A, each character is represented by a specific pattern of bars and spaces.

3.Check Character: A check character is calculated and added to the barcode to ensure data integrity. It is derived from the modulo 103 checksum of the data characters.

4.Stop Character: This character indicates the end of the barcode. Like the start character, it is represented by a unique pattern.

5.Quiet Zone: A quiet zone, which is a blank margin on either side of the barcode, is required for proper scanning. The minimum width of this quiet zone is ten times the width of the narrowest bar or space in the barcode.

Detailed Structure

Start Character (Code Set A): The start character for Code 128A is represented by the pattern '11010000100'.

Data Characters: Each character in the Code 128A set has a unique value from 0 to 102, with specific patterns assigned to each:

For example:

'A' (value 33): '10001001100'

'0' (value 16): '11001101100'

'!' (value 1): '10011100110'

Check Character: Calculated by summing the values of the start character and each data character, then taking the modulus 103 of this sum. The resulting value corresponds to a specific pattern in the Code 128 character set.

Stop Character: The stop character is '11000111010'.

Quiet Zone: A minimum of 10X (X is the width of the narrowest bar).

Example Encoding

To encode the string 'HELLO' in Code 128A:

1.Start Character: '11010000100'

2.Data Characters:

'H' (value 40): '10100011000'

'E' (value 37): '10111000010'

'L' (value 44): '10001011110'

'L' (value 44): '10001011110'

'O' (value 47): '10000011010'

3.Check Character Calculation:

Start: 103

H: 40

E: 37

L: 44

L: 44

O: 47

Sum: 103 + 40 + 37 + 44 + 44 + 47 = 315

Check character value = 315 % 103 = 6

Check character pattern (value 6): '10010011000'

4.Stop Character: '11000111010'

The complete pattern for encoding 'HELLO' in Code 128A would be:

11010000100 (Start)

10100011000 (H)

10111000010 (E)

10001011110 (L)

10001011110 (L)

10000011010 (O)

10010011000 (Check Character)

11000111010 (Stop)

Applications

Code 128A is commonly used in:

Shipping and receiving labels

Inventory management

Packaging

Asset tracking

Due to its ability to encode a mix of alphanumeric and control characters, it is versatile and suitable for various industrial and commercial applications.
