About Code 128 barcode

Code 128 is a high-density, variable-length barcode symbology that encodes alphanumeric data.

It is widely used in applications such as inventory management, shipping, and retail because of its versatility and efficiency in encoding large amounts of data in a compact space.

Here's a detailed description of Code 128:

A. Structure of Code 128 Barcode

1.Start Character: Every Code 128 barcode begins with one of three possible start characters (Start A, Start B, or Start C). Each start character defines a different character set that the barcode will use.

Code Set A: Includes ASCII values 0 to 95 (Control codes, digits, upper case letters, and special characters).

Code Set B: Includes ASCII values 32 to 127 (Digits, upper and lower case letters, and special characters).

Code Set C: Encodes pairs of digits (00-99) efficiently, almost doubling the density of numeric data.

2.Data Characters: These are the characters that represent the actual data being encoded. Each character is represented by 11 modules, which are further divided into three bars and three spaces of varying widths.

3.Control Characters: These include shift characters (Shift, Code A, Code B, Code C) that allow switching between code sets within the same barcode.

4.Check Character: The check character is a modulo 103 checksum calculated from the start character and all the data characters. It helps in verifying the integrity of the scanned data.

5.Stop Character: A specific pattern that signals the end of the barcode. The stop character is followed by a termination bar (typically a single bar) to ensure proper scanning.

B. Encoding Data

Code Set Switching: Within a single barcode, it is possible to switch between Code Sets A, B, and C using the appropriate shift/control characters. This feature allows optimal encoding of mixed data types.

Character Widths: Each character is encoded using bars and spaces that can be one to four modules wide. The total width of each character (including its bars and spaces) is always 11 modules.

High Density: Code 128 is designed to be compact, making it suitable for labeling small items or including a lot of data in a limited space.

C. Example of Code 128 Encoding Process

1.Determine the Data and the Code Set: Suppose we want to encode the string '12345ABCD'.

2.Select the Start Character: Choose the appropriate start character based on the type of data. For example, use Start B for alphanumeric data.

3.Encode the Data: Each character in '12345ABCD' is converted to its respective pattern of bars and spaces.

'1' to '5' and 'A' to 'D' are encoded as per Code Set B patterns.

4.Calculate the Checksum: The checksum is calculated by summing the value of the start character and each character's value (weighted by its position), then taking modulo 103.

5.Add Stop Character: Append the stop character to signal the end of the barcode.

D. Advantages of Code 128

High Density: Efficient encoding of alphanumeric and numeric data.

Flexibility: Ability to switch between character sets within the same barcode.

Reliability: Inclusion of a checksum character for error detection.

Wide Adoption: Standardized and widely used across various industries.

E. Applications

Logistics and Shipping: Tracking parcels and pallets.

Inventory Management: Labeling products and stock-keeping units (SKUs).

Retail: Pricing and product identification.

Healthcare: Patient identification and medication tracking.

F. Conclusion

Code 128 is a versatile and efficient barcode symbology that supports a wide range of applications due to its high data density and ability to encode a variety of characters. Its use of start characters, control characters, and a checksum ensures reliable data encoding and error detection, making it a preferred choice in many industries.
