EDIFACT mode of Data Matrix codes

EDIFACT (Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce, and Transport) mode in Data Matrix codes is a specific encoding method designed to optimize the storage of certain character sets, primarily for applications involving the exchange of standardized data formats. Here's a detailed breakdown of how EDIFACT mode works:

Character Encoding

EDIFACT mode uses six bits per character, allowing it to efficiently pack characters into the Data Matrix code. Here's a step-by-step explanation:

1.Bits Allocation: Each character is represented by 6 bits. This allows up to 64 different values (2^6 = 64).

2.Character Mapping:

Values 0-30: These map to ASCII codes 64-94. In the ASCII table, these correspond to certain punctuation marks, uppercase letters, and control characters.

Value 31: This is a special code used to switch back to ASCII mode if needed.

Values 32-63: These map to ASCII codes 32-63, which include space, punctuation marks, and digits.

Packing Characters into Bytes

Given that EDIFACT mode uses 6 bits per character, four characters can be packed into three bytes (24 bits):

1.Four Characters: The bits for four characters (4 * 6 = 24 bits) are packed together.

2.Three Bytes: These 24 bits are then divided into three 8-bit bytes.

For example, if you have four characters, their corresponding 6-bit values would be concatenated to form a 24-bit stream, which can then be split into three 8-bit groups to form three bytes.

Conversion Example

Let's consider an example to illustrate the conversion process:

Suppose we need to encode the four characters: A, B, C, D.

1.Character Mapping:

'A' = ASCII 65 - 64 = 1 (binary: 000001)

'B' = ASCII 66 - 64 = 2 (binary: 000010)

'C' = ASCII 67 - 64 = 3 (binary: 000011)

'D' = ASCII 68 - 64 = 4 (binary: 000100)

2.Bit Stream Formation:

Concatenate the 6-bit values: 000001 000010 000011 000100

3.24-bit Stream:

000001 000010 000011 000100

4.Splitting into Bytes:

First 8 bits: 00000100 (4)

Next 8 bits: 00100000 (32)

Last 8 bits: 01100010 (98)

Thus, the four characters 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' are encoded into three bytes: 4, 32, 98.

Advantages and Limitations

Advantages:

Efficient storage: By using 6 bits per character, EDIFACT mode maximizes the storage capacity for specific character sets.

Optimized for EDIFACT applications: This mode is particularly useful for encoding data in formats used in electronic data interchange (EDI) applications.

Limitations:

No lower-case letters: EDIFACT mode does not support lower-case letters, which might be a limitation for some text encoding applications.

Special character handling: Switching back to ASCII mode is necessary for characters not supported in the EDIFACT character set, which can add complexity.

Summary

EDIFACT mode in Data Matrix codes is a specialized encoding scheme that uses six bits per character to efficiently store digits, upper-case letters, and certain punctuation marks. By packing four characters into three bytes, it optimizes data storage for applications involving standardized data formats, making it particularly suitable for EDI applications.
