Encoding of QR code

QR codes (Quick Response codes) are two-dimensional barcodes that encode data in a grid of black and white squares.

The encoding process involves several steps to ensure that the data is correctly stored and can be reliably read by scanners, even if parts of the code are damaged.

Here's a detailed description of how QR codes are encoded, focusing on format information, error correction, masking, and data placement.

Format Information

The format information in a QR code records two crucial pieces of information:

1.Error Correction Level: This indicates the level of error correction applied to the QR code. QR codes can have four levels of error correction, represented by two bits:

L (Low) - 7% error correction

M (Medium) - 15% error correction

Q (Quartile) - 25% error correction

H (High) - 30% error correction

2.Mask Pattern: The mask pattern is used to prevent certain patterns from forming within the QR code that could confuse the scanner. There are eight possible mask patterns, represented by three bits. The mask pattern is applied to the data area to break up patterns that could interfere with the reading process.

Masking

Masking is crucial to ensure that the QR code can be accurately read. The mask patterns are defined on a grid and applied repetitively to cover the entire QR code symbol. When a mask is applied, modules (individual squares) corresponding to the dark areas of the mask are inverted. This means that a white module becomes black and vice versa.

Error Correction with BCH Code

The format information is protected by a BCH (Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem) code. Specifically, a (15, 5) triple error-correcting BCH code over GF(2^4) is used. This means that:

The codeword is 15 bits long.

There are 5 data bits.

10 bits are added for error correction, allowing the correction of up to 3 bit-errors.

The generator polynomial for this BCH code is: g(x)=x10+x8+x5+x4+x2+x+1g(x) = x^{10} + x^8 + x^5 + x^4 + x^2 + x + 1g(x)=x10+x8+x5+x4+x2+x+1

This 15-bit codeword is then XORed with a fixed 15-bit mask pattern (101010000010010) to avoid an all-zero string, which can be problematic for error detection and correction.

Data Placement in the QR Code

The message data is placed in the QR code symbol in a specific pattern:

1.Zigzag Pattern: Data is placed from right to left in a zigzag pattern, moving vertically within each column pair. This means that data modules are filled in by going down a column, then up the next column to the left, and so on.

2.Alignment Patterns: Larger QR codes contain alignment patterns to assist with the reading process. These patterns complicate the data placement slightly as they need to be avoided when placing data.

3.Interleaved Error-Correction Blocks: For larger QR codes, data is divided into multiple interleaved error-correction blocks. Each block contains data and error correction codewords, and they are interleaved to enhance the code's resilience to damage.

Summary

The QR code encoding process involves several steps to ensure data integrity and readability:

Format Information: Records the error correction level and mask pattern.

Masking: Applies a pattern to break up potential problematic areas in the data grid.

Error Correction: Uses a (15, 5) BCH code to protect the format information, ensuring it can correct up to 3 bit-errors.

Data Placement: Places data in a zigzag pattern, interleaved with error correction blocks, and avoids alignment patterns for larger codes.

This robust design ensures that QR codes are highly reliable and can be accurately read even if partially damaged.
