Error correction of DotCode

DotCode utilizes Reed-Solomon error correction to ensure robustness against errors that may occur during printing, scanning, or other processes where the barcode could be distorted or damaged.

Here's a detailed explanation of how error correction is implemented in DotCode:

Error Correction in DotCode

DotCode employs Reed-Solomon error correction, specifically with a prime power of 3 and operates within the finite field F113 (GF(113)). This choice of finite field allows for effective error correction capabilities suitable for the barcode's intended use cases.

Parameters and Calculation

1.Data Codewords (ND):

DotCode data codewords are represented by values ranging from 0 to 112.

2.Mask Value:

The mask value is counted as the leading data codeword from 0 to 3.

3.Error Correction Codewords (NC):

The number of error correction codewords is calculated using the formula: NC=3+(ND/2)

where ND is the number of data codewords.

4.Total Codewords (NW):

NW, the total number of encoding codewords, is given by: NW=(1+ND)+NC, where NW includes 1 mask codeword, ND data codewords, and NC error correction codewords.

Handling Excess Codewords

5.Error Correction Block Splitting:

If NW exceeds 112 (the maximum number of codewords that can be represented by DotCode), the data is split into multiple error correction blocks.

6.Calculating Block Counts (B):

B, the number of blocks required, is calculated as: B=(NW+111)/112, This division ensures that each block does not exceed the maximum codeword limit.

7.Splitting Data into Blocks:

For each block 'n', where n ranges from 1 to B:

ND(block) determines the number of data codewords in each block.

NW(block) determines the total number of codewords in each block.

NC(block) calculates the number of error correction codewords in each block: NC(block)=NW(block)?ND(block)

Scrambled Mode

8.Encoding Order:

Error correction data (NC) is written after each single data block (ND) in scrambled mode to enhance error resilience during decoding.

Conclusion

Reed-Solomon error correction in DotCode ensures that the barcode remains readable even when subjected to various types of damage or distortion. By dividing data into manageable blocks and applying error correction at both the codeword and block levels, DotCode enhances its reliability in industrial applications such as tracking individual items in pharmaceuticals, tobacco, beverages, and grocery industries.

This detailed error correction mechanism in DotCode underscores its suitability for applications requiring high reliability and readability under challenging environmental conditions.
