About GS1 128 barcode

GS1-128 (formerly known as UCC/EAN-128) is a subset of Code 128 and is used extensively worldwide in shipping and packaging industries as a product identification code for the container and pallet levels in the supply chain.

It allows for the inclusion of various types of data in a structured format, ensuring interoperability across different industries. Here's a detailed overview of the GS1-128 barcode:

Structure and Format

1.Code Set:

GS1-128 utilizes the Code 128 symbology, which includes three character sets (A, B, and C). Each set supports different characters and data formats, allowing efficient encoding of a wide range of data.

2.Application Identifiers (AIs):

The key feature of GS1-128 is the use of Application Identifiers (AIs). AIs are prefixes that define the meaning and format of the data that follows. For example:

(01) - Global Trade Item Number (GTIN)

(10) - Batch or Lot Number

(17) - Expiration Date

(21) - Serial Number

AIs ensure that the encoded data is interpreted correctly across different systems and applications.

3.Data Structure:

The barcode data starts with a Function Code 1 (FNC1) character, which indicates the start of a GS1-128 barcode.

Following the FNC1, the barcode includes one or more data fields, each prefixed by an AI. Each field consists of an AI and the corresponding data.

Encoding Process

1.Start Character:

The encoding begins with the Start character, which is one of the three Code 128 start codes (A, B, or C).

2.FNC1 Character:

After the start character, the FNC1 character is encoded to signify the beginning of a GS1-128 barcode.

3.Application Identifiers and Data:

Each data element is prefixed with its corresponding AI, which can be of variable length. The data is encoded according to the rules defined by the AI.

4.Check Digit:

A mandatory check digit is calculated for the entire barcode data (excluding the start character and the FNC1). This check digit ensures data integrity during scanning.

5.Stop Character:

The barcode ends with a stop character, signifying the end of the barcode data.

Example

Suppose you want to encode a GTIN, a batch number, and an expiration date:

GTIN: 12345678901234

Batch Number: ABC123

Expiration Date: 2024-12-31

The AIs for these data elements are:

GTIN: (01)

Batch Number: (10)

Expiration Date: (17)

The barcode data string would be:

(Start) (FNC1) 0112345678901234 101234 17241231 (Check Digit) (Stop)

Key Characteristics

1.High Data Density:

GS1-128 can encode large amounts of data in a compact format, making it ideal for detailed product information.

2.Versatility:

Supports a wide range of data types, including numeric, alphanumeric, and date formats.

3.Global Standardization:

Widely recognized and used in international supply chains, ensuring consistency and compatibility.

4.Error Detection:

The inclusion of a check digit enhances data accuracy and reduces the risk of misreads.

Applications

1.Logistics and Transportation:

Used for tracking shipments, pallets, and containers with detailed product information.

2.Healthcare:

Helps in tracking medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and patient information.

3.Retail:

Facilitates inventory management, product identification, and point-of-sale scanning.

4.Manufacturing:

Used for tracking parts, components, and finished goods throughout the production process.

The GS1-128 barcode is a powerful tool for managing and exchanging detailed product information in a standardized and efficient manner, significantly improving traceability and operational efficiency across various industries.
