How many barcode types are there?

How many barcode types are there?

There are approximately 30 different barcode symbology types currently in use, although some are more commonly used than others.

They can be divided into two major categories:

One-dimensional barcodes and Two-dimensional barcodes.

The shift from 1D to 2D barcodes is driven by the demand for enhanced data storage, versatility, and improved scanning capabilities.

Initiatives like the GS1 Sunrise 2027 project may eventually phase out UPC and EAN barcodes in favor of QR codes and Data Matrix codes.

One-Dimensional (1D) Barcodes:

These barcodes systematically represent data by varying the widths and spacings of parallel lines.

Commonly used across various industries to save time and enhance inventory workflows.

Examples include:

UPC (Universal Product Code): Widely used in North America for retail items.

EAN (European Article Number): Commonly found in Europe and other parts of the world.

Note that 1D barcodes are also referred to as linear barcodes.

Two-Dimensional (2D) Barcodes:

Encode data on both the horizontal and vertical axes.

Can represent more data per unit area compared to 1D barcodes.

Examples of 2D barcodes include:

QR codes: Frequently used for various purposes, such as linking to websites, sharing contact information, and tracking products.

PDF417: Offers high data storage capacity and is used in applications like driver's licenses and shipping labels.

A key advantage of 2D barcodes is their error-protection formulas, which keep data intact even when the code is damaged.

2D barcodes have many advantages:

High-density encoding, large information capacity: QR code can accommodate up to 1850 uppercase letters, 2710 numbers, 1108 bytes, or more than 500 Chinese characters. Compared with ordinary barcodes, its information capacity is dozens of times higher.

Wide encoding range: QR codes can not only encode digital information such as pictures, sounds, text, signatures and fingerprints, but also represent text and image data in multiple languages.

Strong fault tolerance and error correction function: even if the QR code is partially damaged, such as perforated or defaced, it can still be correctly recognized. Information can still be recovered when 30% of the damaged area is damaged.

High decoding reliability: Compared with ordinary barcodes, the decoding error rate of QR codes is much lower, with a bit error rate of no more than one in ten million.

Encryption measures can be introduced: QR codes have good confidentiality and anti-counterfeiting properties.

Variable barcode shape and size: The shape and size ratio of the QR code can be adjusted as needed.
