Micro QR code

Micro QR Code Overview

Micro QR Code is a more compact version of the standard QR Code, designed for applications where space is a constraint.

There are four different versions (sizes) of Micro QR codes: the smallest is 11×11 modules; the largest can hold 35 numeric characters, or 21 ASCII alphanumeric characters, or 15 bytes (128 bits).

It is particularly useful in situations where only a small amount of data needs to be encoded and the physical space available for the code is very limited. This makes it ideal for applications such as small parts tracking, component labeling, and other scenarios where traditional QR Codes are too large.

Versions and Sizes

Micro QR Codes come in four different versions, each with a different module configuration and data capacity. The versions are denoted by M1, M2, M3, and M4, with M1 being the smallest and M4 the largest.

1.M1 (11×11 modules):

Data Capacity:

Numeric: 5 characters

Alphanumeric: 3 characters

Binary: 3 bytes (24 bits)

Error Correction Level:

Low (L) level only

2.M2 (13×13 modules):

Data Capacity:

Numeric: 10 characters

Alphanumeric: 6 characters

Binary: 5 bytes (40 bits)

Error Correction Levels:

Low (L)

Medium (M)

3.M3 (15×15 modules):

Data Capacity:

Numeric: 23 characters

Alphanumeric: 14 characters

Binary: 11 bytes (88 bits)

Error Correction Levels:

Low (L)

Medium (M)

High (Q)

4.M4 (17×17 modules):

Data Capacity:

Numeric: 35 characters

Alphanumeric: 21 characters

Binary: 15 bytes (128 bits)

Error Correction Levels:

Low (L)

Medium (M)

High (Q)

Structure and Characteristics

Modules:

Micro QR Codes are composed of square modules arranged in a square grid. The smallest Micro QR Code has an 11x11 grid of modules.

Finder Pattern:

Each Micro QR Code has a single finder pattern located in the top-left corner. This is a distinguishing feature from the standard QR Code, which has finder patterns in three corners.

The finder pattern helps scanners quickly locate and orient the code.

Error Correction:

Micro QR Codes support Reed-Solomon error correction, similar to standard QR Codes, but at fewer levels due to their smaller size. The available levels are Low (L), Medium (M), and High (Q), with each providing different degrees of data recovery capability.

Encoding:

Data in Micro QR Codes can be encoded in numeric, alphanumeric, or binary formats, depending on the version and required data capacity.

Use Cases

Due to their small size and efficient data encoding capabilities, Micro QR Codes are used in various applications such as:

Consumer Electronics: Marking small parts and components.

Pharmaceuticals: Labeling medication bottles and packaging.

Retail: Product tags and small item packaging.

Manufacturing: Tracking components in assembly lines.

Logistics: Labeling small parcels and documents.

Summary

Micro QR Codes are a specialized subset of QR Codes designed for applications where space is limited. With four versions ranging from 11×11 to 17×17 modules, they provide a balance between size and data capacity, supporting numeric, alphanumeric, and binary encoding with varying levels of error correction. Their compact size and efficient data storage make them suitable for numerous industries, including electronics, pharmaceuticals, retail, and manufacturing.
