Product code of EAN-13 barcode

The product code is assigned by the manufacturer. The product code immediately follows manufacturer code. The total length of manufacturer code plus product code should be 9 or 10 digits depending on the length of country code (2–3 digits).

In ISBN, ISMN and ISSN, it uniquely identifies the publication from the same publisher; it should be used and allocated by the registered publisher in order to avoid creating gaps; however it happens that a registered book or serial never gets published and sold.

The EAN-13 (European Article Number) barcode is a globally recognized standard for identifying products. The EAN-13 code consists of 13 digits and is used widely in retail and other industries for inventory tracking, sales, and product identification. Here's a detailed breakdown of the EAN-13 product code:

Structure of the EAN-13 Code

1.Prefix (Country Code):

The first 2 or 3 digits represent the country or region of the product's origin or the organization that assigned the EAN-13 code. This is often called the GS1 prefix.

Example: 0-13 (USA and Canada), 45-49 (Japan), 400-440 (Germany).

2.Manufacturer Code:

Following the country code, the next few digits (usually 4-6 digits) represent the manufacturer or company that produced the item.

The length of this segment can vary depending on the length of the country code and the total number of digits allocated for the product code.

3.Product Code:

The next set of digits (usually 5 digits) is the unique code for the specific product within the manufacturer's range.

This part ensures that each product has a unique identifier.

4.Check Digit:

The 13th digit is a check digit used to ensure the accuracy of the preceding digits. It is calculated using a specific algorithm based on the first 12 digits.

Example of EAN-13 Code

Let's take a hypothetical EAN-13 code: 4001234567892

'40 - Country Code (Germany)

'0123 - Manufacturer Code

'45678 - Product Code

'9 - Check Digit

In summary, the EAN-13 barcode is a robust and standardized method for product identification, providing a systematic approach to managing products in the global market.
