QR code encoding modes indicator meaning

QR codes use a variety of encoding modes to efficiently store different types of data.

Here's a detailed breakdown of the encoding modes, their indicators, and their characteristics:

Encoding Modes and Indicators

1.0001: Numeric Encoding (10 bits per 3 digits)

Purpose: Encodes numeric digits (0-9).

Efficiency: Most compact for numeric data, using 10 bits to encode 3 digits.

Character Count Indicator Bits:

Versions 1-9: 10 bits

Versions 10-26: 12 bits

Versions 27-40: 14 bits

2.0010: Alphanumeric Encoding (11 bits per 2 characters)

Purpose: Encodes a limited set of characters including 0-9, A-Z, space, and a few punctuation marks.

Efficiency: More compact than byte encoding but limited to a specific set of characters.

Character Count Indicator Bits:

Versions 1-9: 9 bits

Versions 10-26: 11 bits

Versions 27-40: 13 bits

Character Formula: V = 45 × C1 + C2

Exception: The last character in an odd-length string is encoded as a 6-bit value.

Alphanumeric Character Codes:

00: 0, 01: 1, ..., 09: 9, 10: A, ..., 35: Z, 36: Space, 37: $, 38: %, 39: *, 40: +, 41: -, 42: ., 43: /, 44: :

3.0100: Byte Encoding (8 bits per character)

Purpose: Encodes binary data and supports ISO-8859-1 character set.

Efficiency: 8 bits per character.

Character Count Indicator Bits:

Versions 1-9: 8 bits

Versions 10-40: 16 bits

4.1000: Kanji Encoding (13 bits per character)

Purpose: Encodes characters from the Shift JIS character set, primarily used for Japanese text.

Efficiency: Uses 13 bits per character.

Character Count Indicator Bits:

Versions 1-9: 8 bits

Versions 10-26: 10 bits

Versions 27-40: 12 bits

5.0011: Structured Append

Purpose: Splits a message across multiple QR symbols.

Efficiency: Not for encoding data, but to manage large messages by dividing them.

6.0111: Extended Channel Interpretation (ECI)

Purpose: Selects an alternate character set or encoding.

Usage: Allows QR codes to use different encoding schemes for more flexibility.

7.0101: FNC1 in First Position

Purpose: Used in GS1-128 barcodes to encode a function code in the first position.

8.1001: FNC1 in Second Position

Purpose: Used in GS1-128 barcodes to encode a function code in the second position.

9.0000: End of Message (Terminator)

Purpose: Indicates the end of the encoded message.

Combining Encoding Modes

Encoding modes can be mixed within a single QR code to optimize storage. The structure of a mixed-mode QR code is:

[Mode Indicator][Mode Bitstream] --> [Mode Indicator][Mode Bitstream] --> ... --> [0000 End of Message (Terminator)]

Example Encoding Modes and Character Count Indicators

Depending on the QR code version, the length field (Character Count Indicator) varies:

EncodingVer. 1-9Ver. 10-26Ver. 27-40

Numeric10 bits12 bits14 bits

Alphanumeric9 bits11 bits13 bits

Byte8 bits16 bits16 bits

Kanji8 bits10 bits12 bits

Summary

QR codes use various encoding modes to efficiently store different types of data. Numeric and alphanumeric modes are more compact but limited in the types of characters they can encode, whereas byte and Kanji modes can encode a broader range of characters but may use more bits per character. The encoding mode is indicated at the beginning of the bitstream, followed by the character count indicator and the encoded data.
