Rectangular Micro QR Code

Rectangular Micro QR Code (also known as rMQR Code) is two-dimensional (2D) matrix barcode invented and standardized in 2022 by Denso Wave as ISO/IEC 23941.

rMQR Code is designed as a rectangular variation of QR code and has the same parameters and applications as original QR code.

It is a variant of the original QR Code, optimized for rectangular areas, making it highly suitable for applications where space constraints are more rectangular than square. The rMQR Code has difference between width and height up to 19 in R7x139 version.

Key Features of rMQR Code:

1.Rectangular Shape:

Unlike traditional QR codes that are square, rMQR codes are rectangular. This allows them to fit better in spaces where a rectangular layout is more efficient.

2.Same Parameters and Applications:

rMQR Codes share the same parameters (such as data encoding and error correction capabilities) and applications as the original QR codes. This includes encoding alphanumeric data, kanji characters, binary data, and more.

3.Version Variability:

rMQR Codes come in different versions that vary in size and data capacity. The 'R7x139' version, for example, can have a width-to-height ratio of up to 19, meaning it is significantly wider than it is tall.

Structure of rMQR Code:

1.Data Encoding:

The rMQR Code uses the same encoding methods as traditional QR codes, which includes numeric, alphanumeric, byte/binary, and kanji modes.

2.Error Correction:

It employs Reed-Solomon error correction, similar to the original QR code, ensuring that the data can be recovered even if the code is partially damaged or obscured.

3.Finder Patterns:

Like traditional QR codes, rMQR codes include finder patterns to help scanners quickly locate and orient the code. These patterns are adapted to fit the rectangular shape.

4.Version and Size:

rMQR codes are available in several versions, with varying dimensions and data capacities. The R7x139 version is one such example, indicating a layout with specific dimensions that can accommodate larger amounts of data in a more rectangular form factor.

Applications of rMQR Code:

1.Space-Constrained Environments:

Ideal for applications where space is limited and the available area is more rectangular than square. This includes product labeling, inventory management, and component marking.

2.Mobile and Handheld Devices:

rMQR codes can be efficiently used on mobile devices for quick scanning and information retrieval, leveraging the elongated shapes of some screen areas.

3.Document Management:

Useful in documents where space for barcodes is limited to header or footer areas, which are typically more rectangular.

4.Manufacturing and Logistics:

Employed in manufacturing and logistics where space on parts or packages is at a premium and rectangular labels fit better.

Advantages of rMQR Code:

1.Better Fit for Rectangular Spaces:

Provides a more efficient use of space in rectangular areas, reducing wasted space and potentially allowing for larger data capacity in the same overall area.

2.Compatibility:

Maintains compatibility with existing QR code scanning technology, allowing for seamless integration into systems already using QR codes.

3.Enhanced Data Capacity:

Depending on the version, rMQR codes can hold more data in the same linear space compared to a square QR code of similar size, optimizing the use of available space.

In summary, the Rectangular Micro QR Code (rMQR Code) is an innovative adaptation of the traditional QR code, designed to be more space-efficient in rectangular areas while retaining the functionality and versatility of the original QR code. Its introduction expands the usability of QR technology to new applications and environments where rectangular spaces are more prevalent.
