Code 128 Barcode Encoding Rules Example

1. Basic Structure

A Code 128 barcode consists of three parts:

Start Code: Identifies the character set type (A/B/C)

Data Code: The actual encoded information

Stop Code: Fixed at {2,3,3,1,1,1,2}4

2. Character Set Selection

Subset A contains: Uppercase letters, numbers, control characters

Start Code Pattern: 2,1,1,4,1,2

Subset B contains: Uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers

Start Code Pattern: 2,1,1,2,1,4

Subset C contains: Numbers 00-99

Start Code Pattern: 2,1,1,2,3,226

3. Encoding Rules

Each character consists of 11 modules: 3 lines and 3 spaces.

Module Width Values: 1 (narrowest) to 4 (widest)

Logical values ??are represented by the width of the bar-space combination.

4. Checksum Calculation

Formula: (Starting value + ¦²(nth bit value ¡Á n)) % 1034

Example: String 'ABC' in subset A:

Starting value: 103

Calculation: (103 + 33¡Á1 + 34¡Á2 + 35¡Á3) % 103 = 06

5. Encoding Example

Character 'A' in subset A:

Logical value: 32

Bar-space combination: Narrow bar-narrow space-narrow bar-narrow space-narrow bar-wide space

Module width sequence: 2,1,1,4,1,22

Complete encoding of string 'ABC':

Starting code: 211412

Data code: 111323(A) + 131123(B) + 131321(C)

Checksum: 0

Termination code: 23311126
